William "Bill" Helgersen, 85, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, at his home in Mokena, Illinois.
William was born on June 20, 1940. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy. Following his military service, Bill built a long and dedicated career as an electrician at EMD, where he worked on locomotive parts and was respected for his skill, work ethic, and reliability.
After his time in the Navy, Bill developed a lifelong love of aviation. He became a glider pilot and was a devoted member of the Park Forest Aviation Club. Flying brought him deep joy and a sense of peace that stayed with him throughout his life.
Bill was a man of strong Christian faith and raised his children grounded in those values. He was physically and spiritually strong, kind, genuine, and deeply devoted to his family. He loved to laugh and smile and wanted the very best for everyone around him.
In his younger years, Bill enjoyed riding motorcycles, eventually choosing to park them in his 80s. He loved gardening, fishing, ice skating, and music. Bill was musical and shared his talents by playing the organ and drums and participating in bell choir. He took great pride in supporting his children in wrestling, track, and all their activities, always showing up and cheering them on.
William is survived by his loving wife, Helen Helgersen; his children, Regina (the late Don) Westerholt, Billy Jr. (the late Jane) Helgersen, and Laura (the late David) Bruno; his grandchildren, Cassandra (Adam) Hydia, Dean Wollenzine Jr., James Flett, Joshua (Robin) Blackwell, Joey (Kim) Bruno, and Amanda Bruno; along with numerous great grandchildren and many other family members and friends.
William was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his beloved in laws and family members who welcomed him home with open arms.
Visitation will be held Wednesday January 14, 2026 from 3:00 PM until 7 PM at Vandenberg Funeral Home in Mokena.
The service for William Helgersen will be held Thursday January 15, 2026at 11:00 AM at St. John United Church of Christ. Interment will follow at St. John's Cemetery in Mokena, Illinois.
Bill's legacy is one of love, faith, laughter, and devotion to family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
