In Loving Memory of Walter Vincent Duffy April 5, 1933 - July 5, 2025

Walter Vincent Duffy passed away peacefully on July 5, 2025, at the age of 92.

Born in Joliet, Illinois to Frank and Bessie Duffy, Walter grew up in Matteson and graduated from Bloom High School. He was one of five children and had a special bond with his twin sister, Patricia. He also shared a close connection with his older brothers Jim and Frank and his younger sister Mary. Walter lived a long and full life and outlived all of his siblings.

Walter served his country with pride in the United States Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany. After his service, he returned home and began a long and steady career as a railroad engineer with the Illinois Central Railroad and later Metra Rail.

He married the love of his life Catherine nee Wegrzyn, and together they made their home in Homewood, Illinois. They raised three children, Ken (Kim), Laura, and Ray (Jessica), and welcomed eight grandchildren into their lives: Lauren, Ryan, Allison, Andrew, Owen, Quinn, Tyler, and Drew. Walter was a devoted father and grandfather, and his presence brought comfort and laughter to those around him.

He was also a proud uncle and brother-in-law, lovingly known as "Uncle Pat" to many nieces and nephews.

After retiring from the railroad, Walter stayed active by working at Balmoral Park Racetrack and the Odyssey Golf Course driving range. He truly loved being around people and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life.

Golf was Walter's greatest passion. He discovered the game as a young caddy at Olympia Fields Country Club and played in leagues across the south suburbs for decades. Whether he was competing in a tournament or just enjoying a sunny afternoon on the green, golf brought him joy, purpose, and lifelong friendships.

At home, Walter was happiest with a cold beer, a scoop of strawberry ice cream, or a strong cup of coffee in hand. He was comforted daily by his beloved dogs, Bella and Madeleine, whose companionship meant the world to him.

Walter's warmth, humor, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
