Robert J. "Sonny" Yunker

Robert J. "Sonny" Yunker, age 86, late of Mokena, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family. Proud United States Army Veteran.

Beloved brother of Marilyn A "Mickey". Yunker. Cherished uncle of Robert J. (the late Terry) Rust, Kurt W. (Karen) Rust, Steven P. (LeighAnn) Wilkenson, Nadine P. (Jim) Roach, Cheryl L. Rust, Teresa A. (David) Wuske, the late Daryl G. Rust, and the late James S. Hendrix. Dear great-uncle to nine great-nieces and great-nephews, and many great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents, Robert F. and Florence E. Yunker (née Schweser); his infant brother; and his sisters, Doris Mae Hendrix and Phyllis F. Rust.

Affectionately known throughout town as Bob, Bobby, and Sonny, he was a familiar and beloved figure in the Mokena community. Sonny was a lifelong member of St. John United Church of Christ, proudly served as a postal worker and former Postmaster in Mokena, and faithfully cared for generations of families as sexton of St. John's Cemetery for many decades. His quiet dedication, steady presence, and willingness to serve made him a man known and appreciated by so many.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 11, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until time of Funeral Service at 3:00 p.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ, 11100 Second Street, Mokena. Interment with Military Honors will follow at St. John's Cemetery.
