Richard "Rick" Van Der Muil passed away, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories and a family who loved him dearly.
Born on March 26, 1952, Rick lived life with a crack of a joke, an adventurous spirit, and an unwavering devotion to his family. He found happiness in the simple things: a fishing pole in his hand, a karaoke microphone nearby, a show to attend, and, most importantly, time spent with the people he loved.
Rick met the love of his life, Jan Kuse, through family while pheasant hunting. That chance introduction blossomed into a lifetime of love, laughter, and adventure. Together they enjoyed traveling and making memories wherever the road took them.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Jan Van Der Muil; his children, Kristena (Spencer) Fetherling, Keri Van Der Muil, and R.J. Van Der Muil; and his treasured grandchildren, Nolan, Dylan, and Avery.
Being Papa was Rick's greatest joy. His grandchildren were the center of his world, he was their biggest fan, always cheering them on with pride and unconditional love.
Rick loved music and never passed up the opportunity to DJ or run a Karaoke night. With his cowboy boots, and cowboy hat, friends often remarked that he looked just like Johnny Cash, a comparison he wore with pride. His sense of humor was legendary. A lifelong prankster, he loved making people laugh and became well known for his elaborate Halloween costumes, especially his unforgettable portrayals of Beetlejuice and The Terminator.
Rick will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, proud Papa, loyal friend, and a man who never met a stranger. His larger-than-life personality will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2026, from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 5:00 p.m. at Vandenberg Funeral Home, 19604 Wolf Road, Mokena, Illinois 60448. Visitation will continue following the service until 8:00 p.m. Private interment will take place at a later time.
