James "Rooster" P. Knight, age 90, late of Orland Park, IL, passed away July 12, 2026. James proudly served the City of Chicago as a firefighter for 33 years, dedicating his life to protecting others with courage, honor, and unwavering commitment. His career was one of his greatest accomplishments, and he carried immense pride in his service.
Known affectionately as "Rooster," James embraced life with enthusiasm and a competitive spirit. A gifted athlete and lifelong sports fan. He was a proud De Lasalle alumni where he played basketball and played on the city championship team of 1952.
He was a devoted Notre Dame football season ticket holder and an avid Chicago sports fan. Golf was one of his greatest passions, and he cherished countless rounds with his family, and friends, as well as unforgettable golf trips throughout Ireland, Scotland, and England.
James enjoyed being an active member of the Clyde Tech Athletic Club, where he looked forward to picnics, Christmas parties, softball, and the lifelong friendships he built over the years. He treasured the time spent at his Florida home, where he enjoyed the sunshine, golfing with his firefighter friends and his nephews, relaxation, and making lasting memories with those he loved. He also loved spending evenings dancing at the Moose Lodge, where his energy, smile, and love of dancing brought joy to everyone around him.
Above all else, James believed that family was everything. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose greatest joy came from the people he loved most. He was his children's, grandchildren's, and great-grandchildren's biggest cheerleader, rarely missing an opportunity to support them, especially from the sidelines of their sporting events. Whether on the golf course, in the stands cheering on his family, or simply spending time together, James made every moment meaningful.
His kindness, strength, infectious sense of humor, unwavering devotion to his family, and the countless memories he created will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
