Catherine Marie Goewey (née Shields)
August 6, 1941 – October 4, 2026
Catherine Marie Goewey, affectionately known as “Cathy,” age 85, passed away on October 4, 2026. Born on August 6, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois, Catherine lived a life devoted to her faith, her family, and serving others.
A lifelong Christian, Catherine had an unwavering love for Jesus Christ and a genuine passion for sharing His teachings with everyone she encountered. She never met a stranger and welcomed every opportunity to make a new friend, share a kind word, or speak about her faith.
As a young woman, Catherine studied and prepared for a life of religious service as a Maryknoll Sister. However, she ultimately felt that God was calling her down a different path, one that would allow her to raise a family while continuing to bring others closer to Christ through her own personal ministry.
Catherine earned her degree in Religious Studies from Saint Xavier University and dedicated much of her professional life to religious education. She taught at Saint Martin de Porres, Joliet Catholic Academy, and Our Lady of the Ridge Catholic School, helping guide generations of young people in their understanding of faith and Christian values. She also led a women’s Bible study for many years, creating a place for fellowship, spiritual growth, and meaningful friendships.
Her commitment to serving others extended beyond the classroom and church. Catherine also worked as a crossing guard for the City of Chicago, demonstrating that even the simplest acts of service could be opportunities to care for others.
Above all, Catherine cherished her family. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, proud grandmother, and faithful sister. Her greatest ministry was not confined to a church or classroom, but was reflected in the love she shared, the lives she touched, and the example of faith she leaves behind.
Catherine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Michael “Mickey” Goewey; her parents, Edward and Evelyn Shields; and her brothers, James, Richard, and Edward Shields.
She is survived by her loving sons, Michael (Isabel) Goewey, Paul (Lauren) Goewey, and Ed Goewey; her cherished grandchildren, Mia, Cristina, Noah, Victoria, Emma, Max, Callan, and Parker; and her dear sister, Mary Anne.
Catherine’s legacy is one of faith, kindness, compassion, and a steadfast belief in God’s promises. Those who knew her will remember her welcoming spirit, her joy in meeting others, and her desire to share the love of Jesus Christ.
A private reception and Celebration of Life honoring Catherine will be held on Thursday, October 15, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Vandenberg Funeral Home, 19604 Wolf Road, Mokena, Illinois 60448.
John 14:1–6
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me so that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
May Catherine find eternal peace in the home her Savior has prepared for her.
